So secretly, I'm really girly and shallow (ok, not so secretly. You can stop snickering now Jenn). Which is why the news about Luella folding is DEVASTATING.
Waaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh!
Where else am I supposed to get heart cutouts in everything imaginable?!
And the bows. Ughhh. The bowwwwwwsssssss. I'll miss you most of all, bows.
It's going to be hard to dress like a granny-child without Luella.
Everything is marked down on the Luella Online Store. If you can see through your welled up peepers, start shopping.

HEY NYU
03 November 2009 | Snorkeled by Yvonne | Labels: nyu
I spent a total of six years at NYU getting my undergrad and graduate degrees. When it wasn't really good times, it was really tough times. Two weeks into my freshman year the Twin Towers came tumbling down blocks away. Thrust into the abyss below Canal Street my sophomore year, all my memories of that time are quiet and gray. Junior year the suicides started. And they continued senior year.
With news of another library suicide this morning, allegedly by jumping, I'm truly saddened.
It was very difficult for me to go back to Bobst after the first wave of deaths.
Rushing through the lobby towards the elevators. Music blaring in my ears. Toes tapping furiously on the marble. Come on, come on, come on... pushing the button over and over and over. Just get me out of here. In. Books. Out. Done. Come on. The momentary peace of the ride up. Then the doors open.
Plexiglas.
No matter how much time passes, the visceral sadness brought on by the sight of plexiglas remains.
NYU is amazingly great, when it's not unbelievably terrible.
Panic grows with each deadline, then subsides momentarily when completed until another is imposed.
It's hard to live in New York. You're always a little bit too poor for everything.
Everyone's always living a little too close to you.
Next to you. On top of you. Below you. Next to you on the other side.
There aren't enough hours in the day for everything. Work, school, a personal life. Dawn always comes to quickly.
Add in some heartbreak, family problems, friend problems, low self esteem, death, ennui, substance abuse, feelings of isolation, and soon it feels like there's a giant stack of encyclopedias resting on your chest.
But it's really not as hopeless as it all seems in the moment.
President Bear-hug Sexton said it best earlier today,
"No matter how difficult things might seem at any particular moment, your life is filled with promise, you belong in and are part of a community that cherishes your presence, you are loved, and there are many people at hand ready and willing to help you — your professors, the staff in the residence halls, the Wellness Exchange, your family, and your friends. I am certain of this: there are many resources to help you, and harming oneself is absolutely the wrong choice."
It's true. No person, or person's actions are worth hurting yourself over.
You're never really alone at NYU. Someone is always willing to listen and help.
You can reach the Wellness Exchange (212-443-9999, or 999 from any campus phone) any time of day, any day of the week to talk about anything. If someone you know is having a hard time, you can call on their behalf.
If you're not affiliated with NYU, you can call 1-800-273-TALK (8255), any day, any time, and get more information here or here or here.

SAD SUNDAY ROAST
25 October 2009 | Snorkeled by Yvonne | Labels: babycakes nyc, recipe, sweet potato and parsnip roast, vegan, vegan mofo 2009, veganmofo, veganmofo 2009
Why sad? Because it's baaaaaaasically just glorified chips/fries. But let me explain.
I spent the better part of 5 and a half hours catching up on the last four months of NME. I'm not saying it was any better when Conor was editor, but jeez at least then I used to agree with sixty percent of it. Now it's barely ten percent. A 1/10 for God Help the Girl, but an 8/10 for Pissed Jeans?! Really? And those reviewers! Maybe I was too nice when I wrote record reviews, but these guys will not only attack your music with empty similes and metaphors, but they'll go after your clothes and hair too. It's all gotten a little too high-school-mean-girls-clique-ish for me. The cover will say "Kings of Leon: rock gods!!!" and the inside will have a go at their tank tops and hair (REALLY?! NOW YOU GO AFTER THEIR HAIR? NOW?! NOT 4 YEARS AGO??) and say everything they do is crap, as if that were some sort of music critique.
Now that I've gone all McClure on you (oh snnnap! topical...), five and a half hours later and there was nothing for dinner. And I was tired. Tired from my eyes bleeding and doing incredulous "PHUH!"s at the turn of every page. Tired enough to put parsnips and sweet potatoes in the oven and call it dinner.
Ingredients:
Method:
Preheat over to 425 degrees.
Leaving the skins/peels on, cut parsnips into disks and sweet potatoes into disks, then halved or quartered.
Put onto a baking sheet. Drizzle olive oil atop, as much as you see fit for your waistline (about two tablespoons-ish).
Sprinkle 2 tablespoons creole seasoning and toss to coat all pieces.
Shake a little salt over everything.
Bake for 30 minutes. Check progress at 15 minutes and give everything a good shimmy-shake so that everything gets browned evenly.
Take out of the oven, salt a bit more, toss and serve!
Served with mustard and horseradish.
Followed by BabyCakes blondies.
Oh yes, a very nutritious day.
LINGUIN(I)(E) AND NOTMEAT SAUCE
24 October 2009 | Snorkeled by Yvonne | Labels: doodle, linguine and not meat sauce, recipe, vegan, vegan mofo 2009, veganmofo, veganmofo 2009
I love Trader Joe's soyrizo because it's such a cheat. All the happy spices and seasonings are already in there so your meal practically cooks itself. So, when there's nothing in the fridge but soyrizo and carrots, linguine and not meat sauce presented itself as a dinner contender.
Ingredients:
I spelled it wrong... of course.
[click to make bigger!]
Method:
Saute onion and garlic in two tablespoons of olive oil over medium high heat in a medium sized stock pot.
Add 6 to 8 ounces soyrizo, 1 diced carrot and 1 and a half teaspoons salt and continue sauteing for 4 to 5 minutes.
Pour in 2 15-ounce cans of diced tomatoes and 1 and a half tablespoons dried parsley. Stir.
Bring everything up to a boil, lower heat and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes.
Serve over your favorite linguine (mine's quinoa linguine, obviously).
As you may or may not know, Italian food isn't my favorite (it's more like my least favorite), so after I took the pretty picture I pulled out half the pasta and ate the sauce more like a stew. Because I'm weird.
QUINOA STRI FRY DOODLE STYLE
22 October 2009 | Snorkeled by Yvonne | Labels: doodle, quinoa stir fry, recipe, vegan, vegan mofo 2009, veganmofo, veganmofo 2009
Ingredients:
[click to make bigger!]
Method:
Cube eggplant (peeling is up to you), and begin de-bitter-ing process. Do you do this? You should. You must. Because I might come to your house one day and have some of your super baba ghanoush, only you forgot to de-bitter and I have to projectile spit it across you living room, crumple to the floor and whimper, "biiiihtttt errrrrr."And that would be sooo embarrassing for me.
So, dice eggplant, place chunks in strainer and salt generously. Place strainer over a bowl and leave for as long as you can (ideally 20 to 30 minutes at least). Check out all that dark liquid in your bowl. That was the bitterness wreaking havoc in your happy little eggplant. Then, I rinse the salt off the eggplant, give it a little press and get to cooking. I'm not sure if that's what you're supposed to do, but that's what I do.
Rinse 1 cup quinoa thoroughly. Place in a pot with 2 cups water and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Bring to a boil. Lower heat and simmer for 18 minutes. This can be done while preparing the rest of the meal.
Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a large sauce pan. Sizzle up 4 minced garlic cloves and 2 sliced shallots for 3 to 4 minutes. Add 1 and a half teaspoons grated ginger and stir for 1 minute.
Add 1 cup sliced mushrooms [or more! 2, 2 and a half cups? go nuts!] and cubed eggplant. [You can add a few stalks of kale too, chopped well after removing the rough center stems!] Saute for 5 minutes. Add 1 tablespoon rice vinegar and 2 tablespoons soy sauce. Sprinkle black pepper to taste. Saute for 10 to 12 minutes, until everything is nice and stir fry lookin'. If at any point the pan becomes too dry, add a few tablespoons of water.
Add 1/2 cup frozen corn and cooked quinoa. Mix well so that everything is well distributed. Give it a taste and adjust soy sauce and pepper levels.
Add 1 cup sliced snap peas, cook for one minute longer.
Serve it up and sprinkle with sesame seeds!
:)
